Dr. Jules A. Shafer is the President and C.E.O., of Controlled Chemicals Inc. Dr. Shafer holds a B.Ch. Eng. from CCNY and a PhD in Chemistry from the Polytechnic Institute of NYU. Dr. Shafer served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Harvard University Chemistry Department, and as Professor of Biological Chemistry at The University of Michigan Medical School. 

In 1990 Dr, Shafer moved from The University of Michigan to Merck where groups under his direction identified several marketed drugs including (Crixivan® (HIV protease inhibitor), Sustiva® (HIV reverse transcriptase inhibitor), Aggrastat® (platelet aggregation inhibitor), and Vaqta® (hepatitis A vaccine) and PedvaxHIB® (Haemophilus influenza B vaccine).  Dr. Shafer left Merck in 2001 to join Controlled Chemicals Inc.
